McKinstry, a national construction and energy services firm, and Fremont RE-2 School District, in consultation with the Colorado Energy Office, have partnered on a $3.2 million project that includes a ~500kW solar PV ground-mounted array to serve the high school and nearly $350,000 in technical services including a two-year student and staff educational program.

As part of its efforts to drive sustainability and resiliency on campus, Mines has engaged their students in its efforts to reduce energy consumption across campus.

“Florence Jr./Sr. High School has a wonderful opportunity to partner with McKinstry and the powerED program to provide some real-world experience to our students 7th grade through 12th grade,” said Florence Jr./Sr. High School principal Dan Melendrez. “This experiential learning will give teachers and students the ability to be educated about the importance of energy efficiency and the environmental impacts that affect us daily. This visit for AP students is just the start to some great learning opportunities for the future.”

“McKinstry is excited to incorporate a student engagement component in the solar study through the Capstone Design@Mines program,” said Leslie Larocque, McKinstry’s Vice President, Energy & Technical Services for the Mountain Region. “Under the direction of our powerED team, students will work and design the study for Mines Park (a small section of the north campus) which will be incorporated into the larger study.”

The Coolidge Unified School District in Arizona is partnering with contractor McKinstry to come up with an innovative way to make a cultural change regarding energy use and consumption. Ben Armstrong and Angela Smiley, oowerED leaders for CUSD, shared with the school board recently the variety of ways that staff and students are becoming more aware of energy use at the site level and plans for the 2016-17 school year.

A partnership between Pueblo City Schools (D60) and a national company aimed at making district buildings more energy efficient is putting the district in the "green," literally and figuratively. In August, McKinstry began implementing energy measures that will translate into a $14 million savings over the next 20 years. To date, this partnership has resulted in a lighting rebate to the district in the amount of $665,020 and an HVAC rebate totaling $33,575.

McKinstry was honored with the Business Award for Excellence in Environmental Education from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) for our powerED program. CAEE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting quality environmental education in Colorado. The powerED team is committed to helping local government organizations and schools to conserve resources, save energy and care for our planet. We are honored to be recognized by CAEE for our behavior-based conservation program.

Shadow Lake Elementary School in Tahoma School District was selected last spring as one of 48 national winners of the 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School award. It was the only public elementary school in Washington state to win last year. As a whole, Shadow Lake has reduced its energy use by 24 percent in the last five years. The site has been designated as a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat since 2005. A few of its other sustainability efforts include a Waste-free Wednesday lunch program, a school worm-farm and creating garden art out of non-recyclable materials to save them from the landfill.

powerED school Mesa Elementary was just announced as a 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School honoree! U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today recognized Mesa as one of 48 schools nationwide being honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways. Mesa is now one of seven schools and two districts in Colorado to receive the prestigious Green Ribbon School award, and is also the first school outside of the Front Range to be recognized.

Mesa Elementary in Montezuma-Cortez School District is one of four schools in Colorado that has been nominated for a national Green Ribbon Schools Award. At Mesa, the school has reduced its energy consumption by more than a third over the past two years. The school district is in its third year of working cooperatively with McKinstry to address energy education and operational optimization. The campaigns spearheaded by McKinstry have challenged students and staff to continually assess, audit and address energy and resource consumption at school and at home.

The comprehensive energy awareness and operational efficiency program leverages McKinstry expertise and the interest and commitment of District leaders to engage staff and students. Their efforts have led to an energy use reduction of 12 percent.

Centennial School District in Minnesota recently hit milestones on both the financial and energy fronts, announcing that it has saved $500,000 and reduced energy use by 13 percent since starting powerED in June 2010.

Congratulations to the City of Boulder, Colo. for winning the American Council for Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) award in recognition of its energy savings performance contract (ESPC) with McKinstry.
