Start now!

Reduce

  • Turn off the lights when you leave unoccupied rooms.
  • Employ sleep-mode settings or shut off computers that are used intermittently in laboratories and offices.
  • Recycle old computer equipment—look for a recycler that has pledged not to export hazardous e-waste.
  • Think before you print: could this be read or stored online instead?
  • Brighten up work areas with plants, which absorb indoor pollution.
  • Turn off air-handling units in areas that are unoccupied at night.
  • Ensure that water leaks are found and repaired promptly.
  • Enlist the janitorial staff. A vigilant janitorial staff can report any leaks immediately and make sure that all faucets are shut off.

Reuse

  • When you must print, do so on both sides of the paper.
  • Use the back side of old documents for faxes, scrap paper, or drafts.
  • Bring your own mug and dishware for those meals you eat at the office.

Recycle

  • Get educated about recycling medical supplies. Disposable single-use medical devices, for example, can be recycled and re-sterilized at processing centers.
