PSA’s EVERY MONDAY

11/15/12 Emerson Elementary

At Emerson, every Monday, a pair of Power Patrols read from a script they’ve written on factoids to help educate their classmates on ways to save energy, save, money and help our planet. It always begins with "I’m ________." "And I’m _______." "And WE’RE POWER PATROLS!" Our school has become wiser because of these PSA(Public Service Announcements).

CUSTODIAN TEACHES KIDS ABOUT HEAT

11/02/12 Emerson Elementary

Custodian John Brendler discussed with Power Patrols how the school is heated. Many thought it was coal, wood or oil that made the school warm. John showed us how gas is used to light the flame that heats the water that is pumped through the pipes in our ceilings to warm our classrooms. He also shared how our 100 year old school is designed to have cold hallways, keeping the heat for the classrooms. Power Patrols have started their "Close your door. Keep the heat in" campaign. Everyone morning a pair of trained Power Patrols close classroom doors as a quiet reminder that we need to keep our heat in and halls cold.

POWER PATROL PUTS UP CLASSROOM CHECKLISTS

11/18/11 Emerson Elementary

As of today, all classrooms have hanging by their lightswitch, a checklist, that can be gone over each day. One of the biggest changes our Staff has made is keeping doors closed. Our school, we learned last week, has a system that brings in fresh air from the outside. This air gets pushed through the boiler and that air comes through our high vents. Heat for our classrooms is also put out by steam in our radiators. Our halls are only heated by a few radiators. This means that, by design, our school is supposed to have cooler halls and warmer rooms. This only works if doors are closed.

Mrs. Pawelski’s Class Uses Reuseable Water Bottles

11/18/11 Emerson Elementary

"Our class loves our reusable aluminum water bottles! Every time we take a sip from them we feel like we are helping our environment!" On Fridays we are also going to start having the students each take the "Take Action Quiz" on the netbooks during Science!!!

GOODMAN CENTER DOES GOOD

11/09/02 Emerson Elementary

Emerson’s Walking Club and Power Patrol joined forces for a quick walk to The Goodman Community Center. After studying the massive solar panels used to heat all the water for the building, we enjoyed some tasty bakery from IronWorks Cafe. Check out how sustainable The Goodman Community Center is www.goodmancenter.org/about-center/green-building
